What is a hardy fuchsia?

Hardies, as they are called in the fuchsia community, are fuchsias that can be grown in the ground.  There are hundreds of varieties that do very well here in the Pacific NW. 

They require only basic care; mulching around the base in the fall and pruning the dead wood back in the spring.  We do not recommend pruning hardies in the winter unless they are in a protected frost free area. Sun or Shade?

A general rule of thumb is fuchsias do better if not kept in full shade. Like most flowering plants, some sun is required.  Fuchsias are outdoor plants.  They are easily transplanted and if you see the leaves or flowers burning from the sun, move the plant to a shadier location and see how it behaves.

Pots or hanging baskets require more shade because the sun dries out the soil faster than those fuchsias planted in the ground.

Pinching Your Fuchsia

The most asked question is " What is pinching "?

Simply, it is pinching off the tip leaves to force branching below.  Most fuchsias are fine if you allow two sets of leaves before pinching the tip.  Some varieties are better pinched after one set of leaves have developed on the branch.   This is what encourges the branching.  More branching means more flowers.
